Queens, NY (July 7, 2023) – A DEP employee was killed in a fatal accident that took place near a Queens intersection in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 6.

According to Queens officials, the accident happened around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Lefferts Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue in the Richmond Hill section of the city. Police confirmed that two sewer maintenance workers were in a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) truck when they were involved in a collision with a Mercedes Benz at the intersection due to reasons that are still under investigation. The accident caused extensive damage to both vehicles and left debris scattered all over the intersection.

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. An employee who was a passenger in the DEP truck, identified as a 38-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained both head and bodily trauma. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away there. The DEP truck driver, identified as a 40-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. The 24-year-old driving the Mercedes was also hospitalized but is in stable condition.

The roadway was blocked near the intersection for some time. This led to delays until the scene was cleared.

No further details have been released, but police continue their investigation into the accident. It is not known if anyone was charged for their role in the collision.

We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the victim whose life was lost in this accident. We also hope that the injured parties receive a full and speedy recovery.
