Queens, NY – Several Injured in Bus Accident on Van Wyck Expy Near Airport
Queens, NY (May 19, 2023) – Around 5:20 a.m. on the morning of Friday, May 19, a bus accident with injuries occurred on a major roadway in Queens.
According to Port Authority Police, the accident happened in the northbound lanes of Van Wyck Expressway headed toward the Belt Parkway near the JFK Airport. Police confirmed that a commuter van was traveling in the area when the driver suddenly slammed into the back of a Delta Airlines bus due to reasons that are not yet known. The bus was allegedly broken down before the accident occurred.
Several responders, including paramedics and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. A total of 15 people sustained injuries due to the accident. One of the victims was hospitalized with serious injuries, and the 14 other victims sustained minor injuries. They were all taken to local hospitals but are expected to be okay.
All lanes of traffic were blocked in the northbound lanes of Van Wyck until police cleared the scene. Police diverted traffic to the service road by the airport.
